1993. Kanashibetsu, a coal mining town.
On the day that it was decided that the Kanashibetsu coal mine would close, the coal miner's union leader, Heikichi Nonaka, committed suicide.
Just before his death, Heikichi told his son, Jin, a coal miner.
"A long time ago, 30 years ago, our seniors buried a time capsule 300 meters underground in the mine tunnels that were to be closed. It contains 'hope'. Look for that capsule someday."
Jin and his fellow miners made a firm promise to meet again on New Year's Eve 2023, 30 years later, to dive into the mine tunnels to look for the time capsule that Heikichi had mentioned, and one by one, the young miners left Kanashibetsu.
30 years later.Kanashibetsu had completely changed, becoming a dead town.
The once young people had grown old, and each of them was living their current lives.
Some lived in the city. Some worked as nuclear power plant workers in Fukushima. Some remained in their deserted hometown. It's New Year's Eve 2023 as promised.

The only ones who kept their promise were Jin and Koji, who remained in Kanashibetsu. There was also a newspaper reporter who had heard the rumors and came to cover the story. The three of them search for "hope" in the old mine tunnels, which are off-limits, and go deep underground. However, on the way there, a rockfall occurs and the three are trapped inside the mine.

At that time, an incident has occurred above ground. It is the news that Satoken, a fellow worker at the nuclear power plant in Fukushima, has been killed. The shocked people learn an even more shocking truth: the killer of Satoken is Kayama, a fellow worker who was in Fukushima with Satoken.

Meanwhile, as Jin and his friends are trying to escape from the mine, they are hit by another rockfall and lose all hope of escape. But then, the capsule they were looking for appears before their eyes.

What is the "hope" sealed inside the capsule they found? In the fading light of the overhead light, Jin and Eguchi attempt a final escape, guided by "hope."

1993年。炭坑の町・悲別。
悲別炭鉱の閉山が決まった日、組合長の野中平吉が自殺した。
平吉は死の直前、炭坑夫の息子・ジンにこう語る。
「昔、30年前。先輩方が、閉鎖される坑道の地下300ｍにタイムカプセルを埋めた。その中には『希望』が入っている。いつかそのカプセルを探してごらん」と。
ジンと坑夫仲間たちは、30年後の2023年大晦日に再会し、平吉が言い残したタイムカプセルを探しに、坑道へ潜ろうと固い約束を交わし、そして、一人、また一人と若い彼らは悲別を去って行った。
30年後。悲別はすっかり変わり果て、死んだような町になっていた。
かつて若者だった彼らも歳をとり、それぞれが今の暮らしを生きていた。
都会で暮らす者。福島で原発労働者として働く者。寂れゆく故郷に残った者。
約束の2023年大晦日。
約束を守ったのは、悲別に残るジンと公次の二人だけだった。それと噂を聞きつけ取材に来た新聞記者が一人。彼ら三人は、立入禁止となっている旧坑道に『希望』を探し求め、地底奥深くへと入って行く。しかし、その途中で落盤にあい、三人は坑内に閉じ込められてしまう。
その頃、地上でも一つの事件が起きていた。それは、福島で原発作業員をしている仲間のサトケンが殺されたという知らせであった。衝撃を受ける人々に更なるショックな事実がもたらされる。サトケンを殺した犯人が、サトケンと共に福島にいた仲間の加山だというのだ。
一方、坑内からの脱出を試みていたジンたちは、再び落盤に襲われ、脱出の望みを絶たれてしまう。が、その時、彼らの目の前に探し求めていたカプセルが現れる。
彼らが見つけたカプセルの中に封じられていた『希望』とは何か―。
弱まり行くキャップライトの光の中、ジンと江口は『希望』に導かれるように、最後の脱出を試みようとする。
