This is a fable.
Piebetsu is a village surrounded by virgin forests at the foot of Mt. Furano in Hokkaido.
The drama unfolds in this village where warm people live despite battling the harsh nature.

It is the night of the wedding of Yuta, a young man from the village. Yuta, the groom, sneaks out of the party, and in the depths of the forest he encounters a human being who is only about 15cm tall. The three men, called Ninguru, tell the three men... "Cut down the forest, or the village will be destroyed."

The villagers laugh at their existence and refuse to believe it after they disappear, leaving behind these mysterious words. Even Yuta, who should have heard what they said along with Saizo, denies their very existence. Saizo thinks he should listen to what they say more, so he starts going to the mountains alone, and tries to convey Ninguru's advice to the villagers. However, the villagers, who want to push ahead with cutting down the forest and developing the land for farming, refuse to listen to his advice, and Saizo gradually becomes more and more isolated in the village.
Eventually, various disasters begin to strike the village as the virgin forest continues to be cut down.
But even so, the villagers, who are still seeking the wealth in front of them, refuse to heed the warnings from the forest. And finally, Saizo, who is increasingly isolated, despairs at his own powerlessness in the face of the overwhelming current of development, and takes his own life.
A year later, a well is dug at the place Saizo had left off.

As the words of Ninguru that Saizo had conveyed to him come true one after another, Yuta feels bitter regret for turning a blind eye to the truth and betraying Saizo, despite knowing his suffering.
And the regret and fear of his father-in-law Tamikichi, who drove Saizo to his death.
Tamikichi makes a decision after hearing the words of his late father Tamikichi, "Connect to the future," and tries to save his frail granddaughter, Skanpo.

The villagers discarded Saizo as a failure.
When development fails, Uta loses everything and falls into despair.
Is there any hope for them?
Will the warm village of those days be revived?
Will the forests and mountains be able to provide the people with their fertility once again?
