The year is 1923.
A young couple is united in a pioneer hut surrounded by the primeval forests of Furano, Hokkaido.
Negoro Kohei, a pioneer farmer, and Shino, a lively woman who has come from Akita to marry him.
The couple's new life begins under the watchful eye of the "roof" of a small prayer hut that Kohei built
with a thatched timber roof.
Supported by the simple love of their cousin, the hunter Teppei, whom Kohei adores like an older brother, the young couple lives a strong life in the harsh pioneering era of Hokkaido.
Kokohei and Shino are blessed with eight children, and although they are poor, they live a happy life filled with laughter and singing.
However, the rough waves of the Showa era's World War mercilessly wash over the Negoro family.
Starting with the departure of the eldest son Ippei and the second son Jiro, conscription notices arrive for the older Teppei and the third son Sanpei as well. Tetsupei, who refused to be drafted, was captured by the military police and sent to the battlefield. Sanpei, troubled by the thought of going to war, committed suicide by taking poison on the "roof" just before enlisting.
The war ended in August 1945.
Even after the war ended, Ippei, Jiro, and Tetsupei did not return to their hometown.
The raging torrent of postwar Japan swallowed up the Negoro family as well.
A miraculous recovery from the ruins. High economic growth. From an era of frugality to an era of extravagance. Japan then developed into the second largest economic power in the world, and the Heisei era saw the collapse of the bubble economy.
In the midst of this raging era, the elderly couple Kohei and Shino, who had begun living in retirement with their fifth son and his wife, began tearing up discarded old clothes and weaving ropes, as if turning their backs on an era that pursued "convenience" and "abundance." The elderly couple's thoughts turn to the nature of their hometown, which they long for, and the warm bonds of their family, despite their poverty, that have been lost in the shadow of "prosperity."
The "roof" has been quietly watching over the Negoro family for 73 years.
The last thing the elderly Kohei and Shino saw on the "roof" was...

大正十二年。
北海道富良野の原生林に囲まれた開拓小屋で、若い一組の男女が結ばれる。
開拓農民の根来公平と秋田から嫁いだ元気者のしの。二人の新生活は、公平が作った
柾を葺いた小さな拝み小屋の「屋根」が見守る中で始まった。
公平が兄とも慕う従兄の猟師・鐡平の朴訥な愛情に支えられながら、若い二人は北海道の厳しい開拓時代を逞しく生きる。八人の子宝に恵まれ、貧しいながらも笑い声、歌声の絶えない幸せな暮らしを営む公平としの。
だが、昭和の世界大戦の荒波は、そんな根来家にも容赦なく押し寄せる。
長男一平、次男次郎の出征に始まり、年嵩の鐡平や三男の三平までにも召集令状が届く。徴兵を拒否した鐡平は憲兵に捕まり戦地へと送られ、、戦争へ行くことに悩み苦しんだ三平は、入営直前に「屋根」の上で服毒自殺してしまう。
昭和二十年八月、終戦。
戦争が終っても、一平、次郎、鐡平は、故郷に戻ってはこなかった。
戦後日本の激流は、根来家の人たちをも飲み込んで行く。
焼け跡からの奇跡の復興。高度成長。節約の時代から浪費の時代へ。そして日本は、世界第二位の経済大国へと発展し、平成の世にバブル崩壊の刻をむかえる。
そうした時代の激流の中、五男夫婦の元で隠居生活を送り始めた公平・しのの老夫婦は、『便利』と『豊さ』を追い求める時代に背を向けるかのように、捨てられてゆく古着を裂いて縄を綯い始める。老夫婦が想いを馳せるのは、『豊さ』の陰で失われた、かつての懐かしい故郷の自然と、貧しくとも温かい家族の絆であった。
根来家の人々を七十三年もの間、静かに見守り続けて来た「屋根」。
年老いた公平としのが、最後に「屋根の上」に見たものは………。
